"Peaches are in!"

cherry creek peaches

If you live in Pontotoc County, the words you’re waiting to hear each summer are “peaches are in!” Course, most of my blog readers are not from Pontotoc County I’m sure, but in Pontotoc we have the Cherry Creek Orchard who supplies the community with the best peaches you’ve ever eaten!

Sliced peaches with fresh whipped cream is a favorite dessert around our place. No extra sugar on the peaches is required and they are just dripping with juice. Our only problem is keeping enough peeled and sliced for the grand kids)))

Now, I’ll have to say that strawberries and whipped cream is their all time favorite thing to eat, but peaches run a close second…..or neck and neck perhaps)))

Whipped cream is super easy to make and you always substitute a little non-sugar sweetener if you’re trying to cut back on calories or for diabetic diets. If you’d like to see my recipe, just click on Whipped Cream.

Choice Cherries Inge-Glas
This Choice Cherries Inge-Glas Christmas ornament just arrived yesterday! Red long stemmed cherries with green leaves. Very luscious looking.

Piece of Cherry Pie

This Piece of Cherry Pie ornament from Old World Christmas looks just like a slice of cherry pie with sugared lattice top. The Hang Tag Reads: Wild cherries are indigenous to the North American continent making cherry pie a truly American dessert. To show off the colorful filling, the cherry pie is usually made with a lattice crust. The crust looks like basket weaving with its fancy, sugar frosted criss-crosses.

The Piece of Cherry Pie ornament makes a great gift, especially with packaged with a nice pie plate or a copy of your favorite cherry pie recipe….or maybe even a real cherry pie……that’s what I would want…….just saying…..

Orange Juice Ornament new for 2010 from Inge-Glas

Orange Juice Christmas Ornament
108910 Inge-Glas of Germany Farmer's Market Collection

Introduced 2010
Whole orange Christmas ornament made of European mouth blown, hand painted glass. Dark green leaf attached. Ornament measures approximately 3 1/4"

I was photographing this ornament along with the Pineapple from Inge-Glas and the Orange Juice ornament absolutely made my mouth water! So I decided to try to make a recipe for a frozen popsicle using oranges and pineapples.....and it was such a success!!

Jeannie's Orange/Pineapple Frozen Pops

1 box sugar free orange or peach jello
1 container of sugar free orange drink mix (I used  the Wal-Mart Great Value Orange Early Rise)
1 large can mandarin oranges with juice
1 large can crushed pineapple in its own juice
2 cups light Cool Whip
2 cups water

Dissolve the jello in one cup of boiling water. Add the drink mix. Add the other cup of water. Run the pineapple with its juice and mandarin oranges with its juice through the blender and pour into the jello mixture. Add the Cool Whip last. The water is not an exact measure but this mixture was thick enough to hold the stick. You could had more or less water depending on the pop containers you're using. I ran out of pop containers with their handles and had to use small dixie drinking cups. Place the cups or pop containers on a flat shallow pan and put in the deep freeze. Run hot water over the container to release.

Delicious and low calorie! Experimenting on my strawberry frozen pop now! Will post it after the second trial.

The Banana is Back!

The whole banana Christmas ornament has been one of our best sellers. Unfortunately our best selling ornament is no longer produced by the vendor, but we have a replacement now! The Best Banana from Inge-Glass looks good enough to eat!

Best Banana  Farmer's Market Collection 2010

Bananas come in a variety of sizes and colors when ripe, including yellow, purple, and red. In popular culture and commerce, "banana" usually refers to soft, sweet "dessert" bananas. Bananas from a group of cultivars with firmer, starchier fruit are called plantains.

Bananas are classified either as dessert bananas (meaning they are yellow and fully ripe when eaten) or as green cooking bananas.

Passion Plum

Passion Plum Farmer's Market Collection 2010

Plum fruit tastes sweet and/or tart; the skin may be particularly tart. It is juicy and can be eaten frefsh or used in jam-making or other recipes. Plum juice can be fermented into plum wine; when distilled, this produces a brandy known in Eastern Europe as Slivovitz, Rakia, Tuica or Palinka. Dried plums are also known simply as prunes.

The Pineapple - A Symbol of Hospitality

Perfect Pineapple Farmer's Market Collection 2010

The pineapple made its way to America through importing methods from the Caribbean in the seventeen hundreds. Since it was rare and had unique characteristics, it was soon the symbol for hospitality in early America. But the problem was getting the pineapple to other places because the only trade routes were by ship. When the ship arrived it was considered to be a great achievement to arrive with a pineapple.

Another story tells that New England ship captains would return from their journeys and would put a pineapple around peoples houses as a symbol of a safe return. The pineapple has such a unique style to it that it was often used as the centerpiece in food banquets. It was also used as for decorating for arriving guests through 18th and 19th centuries.

The pineapple still remains the symbol of hospitality today. It just has that warm welcoming sense to it that says you are welcome to come in.

Fresh Lemonade!

Luscious Lemon Farmer's Market Collection 2010

Fresh Lemonade
  • 1 1/2  cups  sugar
  • 1/2  cup  boiling water
  • 2  teaspoons  lemon zest
  • 1 1/2  cups  fresh lemon juice
  • 5  cups  cold water
Stir together sugar and 1/2 cup boiling water until sugar dissolves.
Stir in lemon rind, lemon juice, and 5 cups cold water. Chill 8 hours. Garnish, if desired. Yield 8 cups.

I like to make a double batch and dispense from a clear glass jug-style dispenser with spout. Fill the container about half full of ice and reduce the amount of the water in the recipe to account for the ice. Slice a couple of extra lemons and drop in some long-stemmed red cherries (rinse first or your lemonade will be pink). Very cool and refreshing!

Now....the down and dirty, quick and easy recipe for Sunday afternoon surprise company!

Same container and decoration with sliced lemons and cherries....orange slices too if you have them......just mix up two containers of Crystal Light or Great Value Lemonade (less water again to make up for the melting ice). I use the sugar free and grandkids love it and never know the difference!
